Some AIs practical application: astonishing results and investigation

The idea of connecting human brain to computers is moving closer to becoming a reality thanks to the rapid artificial intelligence’s development. Presently, there are some digital technologies and AI models that already allow transforming thoughts into text through human hands’ movements, actions that have often before required a brain implant.

Background
Most presently available for use brain machine’s interfaces require surgery; meanwhile, the electrodes in human wristband are able to pick up brain-type bio-signals in the hand’s muscles, instead of putting the sensors directly in the brain by drilling into the skull.
Last year, Elon Musk’s brain chip Neuralink was first implanted in a human skull; specialists say it could play a role in, e.g. helping stroke patients recover. Scientists are presently looking at potential AI or ther technology’s use in human’s medical conditions through bio-Nerio-electronics, both to restore abandoned functions and/or de-coding them.
Now, scientists at the University of Technology Sydney are using a cap-like device to explore how AI can interpret brain activity.
The AI-powered cap monitors the brainwave patterns of a person wearing it and converts their thoughts into written language.
The team behind the decoder says the system relies on two distinct types of AI to interpret brainwave signals. Initially, researchers used a deep learning model to digitally translate the brain signals, then they used a large language model to make the match of the decoded words and make up for the EEG’s decoding. The results are presently about 75 per cent accuracy; the team is working toward a goal of 90 per cent accuracy.

Thus, some researchers have taken a different approach based on de-coding brain’s natural output in the hands, thus, so-to say “copying brain’s signals” in the wrist, forearm and/or muscles that control hand and finger movements. These neuromuscular signals are processed in a real time AI model and send commands to Bluetooth in a computer.

Meta’s breakthrough
The wristband, developed by Meta’s researchers, has made a difference: researchers recently published a study on a new wrist-worn device that turns the slightest muscle twitches into the digital commands. Thus, the “neuromotor wristband” can “capture the intention behind the movement, even if the user’s hand isn’t touching a screen or surface”, and can detect and decode electrical signals produced by forearm muscles using AI model.
Meta also showed how people can move a cursor around a screen and play games using only finger taps or tiny hand motions.
The Meta team collected training data from thousands of participants to build an AI that works for users with different movement styles. The team says the wristband will be able to help a wide spectrum of users, from individuals with disabilities to everyday users.
The outstanding importance of research is demonstrating that “there are some inherent scaling laws, that allow to build a general model” for almost all human’s movements by putting a specific digital band and “start using their brain directly”.
Patrick Kaifosh, director of research-science at Meta Reality Labs, said he expects “the technology to go a great deal farther”; and that the results of scaling curves continue to be more precise and better, he added.
Meta says it hopes that the study would offer a blueprint to the broader scientific community “to create neuromotor interfaces of their own”; and Meta has recently released over 100 hours of muscle’s digital signal-data from more than 300 participants.

Meta under investigation in Italy
However, the Italian antitrust authority launches investigation into Meta’s WhatsApp AI chatbot, claiming that the tech giant is effectively forcing WhatsApp users to use its artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Besides, Meta owns several major social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
The Italian antitrust authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, AGCM) has accused Meta of violating the EU’s competition laws by integrating its AI chatbot into its messaging app WhatsApp, potentially abusing its “dominant position” in the market to promote its own AI services.
“Starting from March 2025, Meta, which holds a dominant position in the app-based communication services market, decided to pre-install its artificial intelligence service on the WhatsApp app,” AGCM wrote in a statement: in doing so, Meta may be ‘imposing’ the use of its chatbot and AI assistance services on its users, the antitrust authority continued.
By linking Meta AI with WhatsApp, Meta appears to be steering its users into the AI market not through fair competition, but by forcing the two services together in violation of EU law.
The European Commission has launched an inquiry already this March into whether Meta’s AI tool would fall within the scope of the EU Digital Services Act, DSA.
